Biological Treatment System Now Online

Shortly after opening the doors and pipelines of NewStream in 2005, we realized that a biological treatment system would be an important addition to the facility. After many months of assessing costs and benefits, evaluating and testing options, engineering, and finally installing the new equipment, we are very happy to announce that our biological treatment system is now online!

On Monday, December 3, the bugs were welcomed to their new home in NewStream’s MBBR (Moving Bed Bioreactor), supplied by Hydroxyl Systems, Inc., and after a brief period of acclimation, they are ready to be fed! The MBBR will enable NewStream to treat waste streams with high biological oxygen demand (BOD) by converting contaminants into organic mass and gases. In most cases, this “secondary” stage of treatment will follow chemical/physical pretreatment processes that remove solids, inorganic and other compounds.

Specifically, the ActiveCell™ technology employs thousands of polyethylene biofilm carriers operating in mixed motion within an aerated wastewater treatment process. Every biofilm carrier provides an active surface area sustaining heterotrophic and autotrophic bacteria within protected cells. This high-density population of bacteria achieves high-rate biodegradation within the system, which provides higher productivity and greater adaptability to varying influent characteristics than most other biological systems in use today. The system will operate 24 x 7, treating up to 35 gpm of wastewater (50,000 gallons per day)

NewStream President, Sam Butterfield, says of the system, “We are excited to finally get this system on line. It not only improves our water quality but dramatically expands the range of waste streams we can handle. We had no idea when we started that high strength organics comprised such a large segment of the non-haz wastewater market. This will also allow us to handle residuals from future recycling operations such as gasoline, glycol and spec used oil recovery.”

Additionally, NewStream expects to be adding an anaerobic system that will allow us to treat even higher strength waste streams and to realize one of NewStream’s original goals, namely that of creating usable energy from its inbound waste streams. This new process, which is currently in the design phase, should come on line in late 2008.

Bulk Water Available Now

NewStream is now offering groundwater in bulk quantities to transporters in the region. Applications include:

· Well water (non-potable) for compaction, dust control, perk/drainage testing, hydro seeding, masonry construction site tanks, emergency irrigation, well shocks, drought relief, landscape watering, fire pond filling, hydro testing supply lines, skating rinks, etc.
· Swim-ready sparkling, treated pool water for residential, municipalities, country clubs, hotels, fitness centers, etc.

Our 500,000-gallon tank is continually refreshed, and is used only for the purpose of flushing our treatment systems during maintenance. We have the ability to process this groundwater and filter it clean, balance the PH, remove staining metals (such as copper, iron, and manganese), chlorinate, and even preheat. Every load can be prepared to the transporter’s specifications.

Bulk water transporters benefit from having water sources that are spread out geographically in order to minimize fuel costs. We hope to serve this niche industry by providing a water source that is close to their customers in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Fall Customer Survey

As NewStream continues to grow, we are continually looking for new and better ways to serve you. Last fall, we conducted a survey of our customers to assess how we were doing in your eyes: Were we living up to your expectations? Was there any way we could serve you better? As a result of your answers, we made several changes at NewStream – everything from adding hours on Saturdays, to hiring an Office Manager to answer your phone calls and ensure that the acceptance process goes as quickly and smoothly as possible. We also added new services, such as antifreeze recycling, and new technology, like our biological treatment system. And, we are looking forward to putting even more new wastewater treatment solutions on line in the coming months.

So, we’ve asked one more time: How are we doing? In October, each customer received a similar (slightly shorter) questionnaire to the one we sent out last year. And, in case you missed it in the mail, the questionnaire is also available on our web site home page at www.newstream.biz. Your time in completing it would be very much appreciated! And, if there are issues that are not covered in the questionnaire that you would like to address, please feel free to share your thoughts.

Our New Site

Our new web site, that is. We welcome you to visit our newly updated web site at www.newstream.biz. We’re excited about the new look of the site, as well as the new content, including information on our expanded service offerings and capabilities, as well as a page for our NewStream team. Your comments are welcome as always!

The overhaul of the site was prompted by our goal to be more visible in search engine results. We determined that the original site was not very “search engine friendly,” which meant that those who were looking may not have been able to find us online. Since the update, NewStream has consistently been in the top five results for industrial wastewater treatment in Massachusetts on Google and Yahoo!
